Whether you are making the transition from indoor volleyball to the beach or you are just starting volleyball, there are some important things you need to know before you take your game to the sand. The first thing I want talk about is moving in the sand. Indoor volleyball players learn how to do rolls on the ground when they dive for a ball. In sand you will never need to roll and frankly you don’t have time to be rolling in sand. Because the surface is much softer you can simply dive and you won’t have to worry about getting injured. You want to stay low when playing defense, but not on your heels. If someone shoots the ball you will get there faster if you stay low instead of standing up all the way and then running over to get the ball. In the time it takes you to straighten your legs to stand all the way up you could have taken one step. Everyone naturally stands up and then runs, so this is something you will need to consciously work on until it becomes habit.
One of the biggest differences from indoor volleyball and beach volleyball is the jumping. When you jump off of a court you can use a lot of your forward momentum and convert that into vertical leap. This doesn’t happen so much in the sand, so the form for jumping is different. A lot of good indoor volleyball hitters play beach volleyball and hate it because they can’t get out of the sand to hit a ball even though they are well over 6 feet tall. In indoor volleyball when you approach to hit a ball you jump forward and end up landing either a foot or many feet in front of where you started your jump. When playing beach volleyball you will have to learn how to jump straight up with little to no forward movement in the air. Because you are jumping from an unstable surface you will notice that your sink a few inches before you take off and this will greatly decrease how high you can get. So when you approach you want to hit harder with your last 2 steps. The idea is to pack the sand under your feet as hard and as fast as possible so you have something a little more solid to jump from which will result in a higher vertical in the sand. This will feel different at first but the sooner you learn to stomp hard before you jump, the sooner you will be able to get your feet out of the sand. Don’t get discouraged if you feel sluggish when starting to play sand volleyball, your legs will get accustomed to it and you will get faster in the sand then you were on the court.
What sport requires more jumping than any other sport?? Volleyball, and more specifically beach volleyball.? It’s no wonder that the best jumpers are beach volleyball players.? If you have ever jumped out of deep sand you will realize that it takes a lot of effort to even get a foot out of it.? So when you see sand volleyball players getting there armpits above an 8 foot high net you come to see how good of jumpers they are.?
How can you learn to jump like the best jumpers in the world?? By being disciplined and doing plyometric workouts like they do.? Plyos are exercises designed to teach your body how to jump higher.? This is done through combining jump training with strength training.? Either program alone will not produce the same results as a combination of the two.? You must teach your muscles both strength and speed to produce power.? The equation is very simple, you can’t leave out one part or it will not work.
Why should follow a beach volleyball workout program?? Think about how much they jump compared to any other sport.? For every single point that is scored 3 out of the 4 people will most likely jump and in some cases all 4 players will jump.? This ends up being a lot jumping for each individual player.? Taking into consideration that they are getting as high as basketball players even when jumping out of sand means that their vertical leap is substantially greater than that of any other athlete.
Many locales will interfere with a player’s ability to apply the rules of regulation volleyball to the games that are being played in communities throughout America. Some of the surroundings are just not set up to handle volleyball games and players have to be ingenious when working around those obstacles. Some beach volleyball areas will not have nets in place throughout the year, so it will be difficult for players to judge whether the volleyball actually went over a virtual volleyball net.
Some volleyball players will play the game with fewer people because not all friends could get away to the beach that weekend. They might work around this obstacle by inviting strangers to play the game and end up having a great time anyway. Some of those people might be professional athletes in their own right and be thankful that they have an outlet for the built up energy they have accumulated due to being inactive for two or three days. They will enjoy getting back home and back to their regular workout schedule.
Most players improvise playing areas to comply with rules as best they can by marking the center line of the volleyball court with bricks, skiing ropes, coolers or anything else that is handy. The regulation methods for scoring a volleyball game can also be modified by the players, because some people enjoy playing the game of volleyball for the action and do not even bothering with keeping up with who is winning.
Other people will rent out some locations that people find to play volleyball during the day. The time restrictions for playing a regulation game of volleyball might not apply under these limited playing conditions. The rules for volleyball might change to allow an unlimited number of hits on all sides, but the rules that apply to the ball hitting the ground will not change so people feel that they are playing the best volleyball possible.
Large groups of people might cause the rules for the number of players on each team to change. Instead of having four to six players on each side, a volleyball game might progress with twenty people on each side. Since safety is a big concern during any type of volleyball game, there might be new rules incorporated during the game that limit the movements of the players to one specific area.
Once players start modifying the rules for a volleyball game there is generally some interesting additions. Some people might make it habit to hit the ball in their service area more than one time, and then complain when a player on the opposite side of the virtual net does the same. This might cause some players to remind the others that the game is for enjoyment and not for competitive undermining.
When playing volleyball on an empty lot in a neighborhood, there are certain rules that are simply not possible. Each volleyball team might be unable to clearly mark boundary lines, or dig holes to insert the volleyball net holders. When this type of property is used for volleyball practices, the players will usually use natural resources like tree trunks to tie the volleyball net ropes around.
